Kiln news

After the wet Spring we are finally back on site at the brick/tile kiln.

We have now exposed all four walls giving us the size of the kiln, 16′ (4.8m) by 10′ (3.0m). Two stoke holes have now been confirmed, see picture, ranging pole 0.5m.

Currently we are trying to locate the working floor but this may have been demolished as it has to be above the stoke holes, however we are looking at the walls to see if there is any evidence left to indicate its location. At a later stage we will also excavate down to the base of the kiln. Excavation of the outside of the stoke holes continues as we have, as yet, not found evidence of heat or burning.

As work continues on the kiln we are not ignoring all the ‘lumps and bumps’ adjacent to the site. These will be investigated as time and resources permit.

As always if you’d like to get involved just send an email to swagkent2023@gmail.com, you will be made most welcome.
