Geophys in Cobham

During the recent ‘heatwave’ our team still went ahead with the magnetometry of the sports field. For a video of Andrew in action click on the image below.

The main Big Village Dig project covers the weekends of the 15th/16th, 22nd/23rd and 29th/30th July. In the week of the 17th we will be working with Cobham Primary School and in the week of the 24th we will have our main community dig week in the village, across several locations!

Using pottery in post excavation research

This week the pottery finds from the Randall Manor dig have been laid out in order to compare with the stratigraphy of the site, with the aim of dating the site more securely. Thanks to Nigel for sharing his knowledge with us. Thanks also to the Kent Archaeological Society who have funded the work.

The Hollow Way  has now been back filled (thanks to all who helped) and tomorrow Nigel will take a look at the pottery excavated from the dig.  It should reveal a nice archaeological story relating to both trenches.

While this was going on inside the barn at Cobham, outside others were marking mainly post-medieval pottery retrieved from a Cobham dig in 1962.

Historypin and the Randal Manor flask

Work at the Randall Manor dig uncovered a lead flask buried in the floor of the stone cross wing extension of the medieval manor (the cross wing was probably added in the early 14th century, to a 13th century aisled hall). This find was recently added to the local history website Historypin.
