Some hoard inspired poetry

In response to the Hoards and All advent calender our members have gone all poetic. Here are a couple from the trenchs:

A hoard is like this is one of a kind
Our ancestors left it for us to find
Buried for years in all its glory
For Sophie to dig up and tell us their story
(Nicola)

On opening five, man alive
How did that treasure all survive
Below the ground safe and sound
Just sitting, waiting to be found
(Bill)

Bronzes abound
Out of the ground
Below a bronze age mound
Delighted to be found
(Anon)

Another page has turned
A battle axe appears
What have owner in tears

Perhaps a metal worker's hoard
An offering, a simple rite
Better crops my Lord
Whatever you like

The soil is removed, with little motion
The axe shines after restoration
It's just a notion
Did it see any action?

Sophia's restoration
A wonder to behold
Keep fingers crossed
Might be another load
(David)

Albert Daniels

It is with deep sadness that we bring you the news that Albert Daniels, a regular on the archaeology scene in Kent, passed away this morning in Maidstone hospital. He contributed a great deal to Kentish archaeology and history over the years and he will be greatly missed.

From Andrew:

Albert was a towering personality and a gifted amateur archaeologist with an encyclopedic knowledge of the archaeology of the county. You could drop him into any site and he would crack on with his can do attitude and no nonsense approach. As I got to grips with riding the juggernaut that was Randall Manor, he was always a voice of wisdom in my ear. They don’t make archaeologists like Albert anymore and we are much the poorer for his passing. He also made great strides to write up his catalogue of excavated sites, an example to us all. I have many memories of Albert, from his participation in many seasons at Randall, to his rule over the finds tent on the Lullingstone dig last summer. Memories and tributes are being left on the Maidstone Area Archaeological Group facebook page, a group he will always be synonymous with.

Crockhamhill Commons survey

This week SWAG members are joining up with Sevenoaks Commons Heritage volunteers to survey Crockhamhill Common by foot. We’re looking for features that have shown up on a recent LiDAR map and recording details for future reference.

Today was a successful start with little to no rain to speak of. We found ditches (probable WWI training slit trenches), mounds (possible medieval rabbit warrens), the Common’s boundary wall and a hillfort. With our local guide Gareth at the helm we fought through the dense forest armed only with red and while survey poles. Tomorrow is Gareth’s day off so I hope the next team will make it out by sundown…
