South East in Bloom

We’ve just heard that the gardening volunteers at Shorne Woods, who double as archaeologists, have been awarded a gold in the Country Park section of the South East in Bloom 2020 competition. Congratulations!

South & South East in Bloom is part of Britain in Bloom and runs annual competitions across the counties of Kent, Surrey, East & West Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, East & North Dorset and East Wiltshire. Each year entries participate from Villages, Parishes, Towns, Cities, Coastal Towns, Town & City Centres, Urban Communities and Business Improvement Districts. Our judges/ assessors visit communities and awards are presented to recognise the entries achievements.

Found flint

On a walk around the park, after the recent heavy rain, a member of the public found a marvelous flint adze protruding from the ground.

They have kindly donated it to the Group.

The third photo shows the bottom edge, broken in ancient times, perhaps a reason for abandonment.

LiDAR portal

We have now added the Commons areas as a layer on the LiDAR portal, so you can now see if features are inside a Common or outside!

Go to https://kentlidar.org.uk/wp_kent/wp/

Very happy to run further sessions on the portal and LiDAR as required!

Outdoor activities to follow, hopefully by the end of August.
