Important Mesolithic sites for North West Kent

Mesolithic sites in Kent are less well understood than sites from other prehistoric periods therefore evidence of two substantial sites is important for our understanding. The first is in Shorne Woods Country park, where two Lottery-funded archaeology projects have been investigating a number of Mesolithic flint scatters. The other is at Ranscombe Farm on the Plantlife Nature Reserve.

Thanet Survey

Next week (2/3 September) we will be working on the Thanet Survey. Richard will be running 2 days down on Thanet to lay out the grid, for the geophysics survey to follow.

We will meet at Shorne at 9am on Wednesday and Thursday, to travel together in convoy. If you would rather go direct, aim for this field and park along Ebbsfleet Lane, on the east side of the field.

Please bring food and drink for the day and clothing for all weathers! Facilities are limited on site, but there is a delightful services just up the road.

I will be out on site geophysing with Richard from the following Monday (the 7th) and we would welcome help throughout that week and the week of the 14th and 21st…

I can promise sea-views and bracing fresh air, plus lots of exercise!

Soil sampling
